Las Vegas, December 04, 2024 – Shelley Berkley was sworn into office as the new Mayor of Las Vegas Wednesday morning before her first city council meeting. Surrounded by her family, Berkley promised to serve the city well and work with the community.

“I believe the next 10 years we will see unprecedented growth and prosperity in our city. I will endeavor to create an atmosphere where everyone who wants to share in the success of Las Vegas has the opportunity to do so no matter the color of your skin, where your family is from, whether you’re Republican, Democrat, or Independent, and whether you’re a business owner or a proud union member. Las Vegas needs your talent, drive, and hard work if we’re all going to succeed,” she told the audience.

The night before her swearing-in ceremony, Berkley celebrated her victory with a private dinner at Siena Italian Authentic Trattoria. The restaurant’s owner, Antonio Accornero, was present to offer his good friend congratulations. “Shelley is going to do a great job as Mayor,” he said. “She is a knowledgeable and ethical leader, and I’m looking forward to what her dedication will bring to our growing city.”

The former U.S. Congresswoman, who was elected to the mayor’s office last month in a runoff against Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman said that one of her priorities when taking office will be resolving the city's ongoing dispute over the Badlands Golf Course. The city has been locked in litigation over potential development of the site. Berkley also expressed that she wants to bolster resources to help address the city's homeless crisis.

Berkley brings years of experience to the office. From 1999 to 2013, she served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and then led the Touro University system. Quite notably, her election concludes the 25-year Goodman dynasty that led the city of Las Vegas.
